Santa Fe - Two Man Art Show

I've just returned from my two man show on Canyon Road in Santa Fe with Ventana Fine Art. It's my third year sharing in a show with the supremely talented Frank Balaam, a great friend & artist. The gallery as ever is hung beautifully, it's filled with such talented and knowledgeable staff, it's always a joy to see them all again.

Franks work is meticulously detailed and impasto, and is impressive to be seen in person. Though each of our styles and aesthetics are singularly unique, and our processes are very different from each other; our passion for strong color wins through and we hangs beautifully together.

We got the cover of Santa Fean Now magazine, as well as featuring in a number of other publications.

Frank lives in Arizona, and I California, but we both came originally from Britain. We enjoy coming together for this show in Santa Fe, to share art stories and reminisce about 'old blighty' (Britain).

Painting workshop in Nashville

Last week I spent most of the week in Nashville, TN teaching a workshop. It was my first time to that part of the country,  so I was looking forward to exploring Tennessee.
 
I teach about one workshop a year, focusing the rest of my efforts on paintings and shows. I really enjoy to teach, but boy, is it exhausting but so much fun meeting so many other talented artists and learning their stories and art! The focus is very different; teaching and sharing methods, compared to a very insular journey of self expression. To this I feel my balance is right in keeping the teaching opportunities to a minimum; to that end they often fill quickly, and this session was at maximum capacity.

The night before the workshop we held a demonstration evening. I always enjoy that process, many artists I know hate to paint in front of an audience, but for me I seem to enjoy the attention? :-)

The demonstration lasted about 2 hours and I think it went well despite some confusion, on which way the light was hitting my subject. At times I painted the shadow falling to the right, while on other objects, the light hit from another direction!  Sometimes the talent of talking and painting simultaneously, shuts down a few of my cognitive abilities. In truth it probably made for good comedy, ultimately I fixed the light source problem and and I think the demo painting turned out well.

The following three days were spent working with each student, teaching methods that I employ when tackling painting subjects; as well as getting to know their styles, strengths & weaknesses. I think they all did great!   During the workshop we also had time for some little exercises which everyone seemed to enjoy.

A tall sprawling mess of complexity

Loved painting the tall sprawling mess of this Chrysanthemum flower arrangement. It gave the whole painting so much energy, and set the tone for much of the overall design and brush work. Using this tall thin aspect of canvas (or panel), makes for such interesting still life arrangements and designs.

Workshop in the fall

In a few short weeks I'll be teaching a workshop in Nashville. Looking forward to meeting all the students and exploring a part of the country I've never been to before!  The class has been full for a long time, so I recently agreed to hold a second workshop later in the year, This will be up in the mid-west in Michigan. Hopefully see you there? The classes are a lot of fun;-  I try to get lots of simple and fun ideas across, teaching techniques to loosen up and break free from conventional styles and old habits. Encouraging simple methods to create stronger compositions, and push student's color development and understanding. During the workshops, I will teach many aspects to painting, with a particular focus on color, simplifying composition, and the importance and power of dynamic ‘under painting’.
